Pull the dryer knob off the timer shaft. Some dryer manufacturers have a small cclip securing the knob to the timer shaft. Grab the clip behind the dryer knob with a pair of needlenose pliers. Pull the clip up until it disengages from the shaft, and pull the knob off the unit. The clip is part of the dryer knob.
The timer knob that came on my new GE dryer cracked apart at the D shaped opening that slides onto the timer stem. This GE branded replacement has added a metal ring around the outside of this opening to hold the plastic in place if it breaks. GE should voluntarily replace these at no charge.
