Due to its chemical and mineralogical composition, CFA is considered as an abundant and cheap source of aluminosilicate to produce valuable advanced materials, such as zeolites, catalysts, photocatalyts, and geopolymers, with high adsorption capacity towards pollutants.
Because coal is an abundant and relatively lowcost fuel, the added cost of advanced preparation technology, combined with the cost of coal that is lost with separation process wastes, makes it extremely difficult for advanced cleaning methods to be economically competitive for applications involving direct coal
Some of the coal use scenarios described in Chapter 2 include projections for growth in coaltoliquids and coaltogas plants in the post2020 period. In general, the transport of energy products from such plants would be similar to the pipeline and other distribution systems currently employed at petroleum refineries or gas processing plants.
